Abandoned after 60 pages. Reads like someone in a manic state frenetically telling you in painstaking detail about something you have absolutely no familiarity with. Place names, people, events go quickly skipping by, leaving me unenlightened about anything. A glance ahead gives me no belief this changes, so, ah well.Beware the translator's warning, I suppose: "The book has been a challenge for the translator and will be a challenge to the reader Readers new to all this will be disorientated at [...]

Field of Honour was written by Max Aub in exile in Paris, May to August 1939, and published in Mexico in 1943. Between the writing and the publication – the author’s internment by the French and deportation to a Concentration Camp in Algeria. gatesyread/2017/07

I wasn't overly impressed with this book. I found it to be quite garbled and confused. I think this is due to much of the story being told in dialogue and because of that context is loss through a lack of narration. What I'd say the book does do well is give a vivid sense of time and place in history. It's also really weird how much time the book dedicates to the main character masturbating.

In a spare, modern and genial writing Max Aub describes the dawn of the spanish civil war in Barcellona, a violent and dangerous city in those years, where events related to Rafael Serrador represent as often revolution is in the reality far from ideals.
