How exciting to read a picture book written by a former president! If you have read any of my reviews you know that my daughter and I have been covering Presidential History for more than two years now, chronologically from Washington to now Carter, being able to add a story penned by a president to our morning reading was very cool. Jimmy Carter if you’re reading this we would LOVE to meet you! This is a tall-tale about a disabled boy that proves disabilities do not define a person and no one [...]

The Little Baby Snoogle-Fleejer by Jimmy Carter, Illustrations by Amy Carter (Times Books, New York 1995) (Fiction - Children's). We received this copy as a gift following the birth of our first child. It bears the signatures of both the author an [...]

The themes are loyalty and how our assumptions about others can often be incorrect. The story isn't very interesting or surprising: (view spoiler)[Jeremy, a child you relies on crutches to get around, befriends a sea monster. When Jeremy's mother gets ill, the sea monster dives for gold to help them pay for an operation. Short version: a mythical and misunderstood creature turns deus ex machina. (hide spoiler)]

When I first read this, I got this weird impression that it was written by a youngster. Maybe a third or fourth grader who was advance for their age and got a book published. Even the name "snoogle-fleejer" sounds like something a kid made up. Imagine my SHOCK when I realized that President Jimmy Carter wrote the book! OH MY GOSH.

Look beyond the use of old-fashioned words, like "crippled," and you will be taken by this sweet story about a good boy.

This is a fairy tale about a boy who becomes friends with a monster. Its good to have if you are talking about courage.

There are passages that are way to big for kids, and passages that are way too simplistic; yet there is no moral, point or even conclusion. It really just feels like words on a page.
