2.5 stars rounded up because I really thought the idea of this book was a fun one.Hanna Loch is a senior in high school and she is one of those kids that rarely give anyone any trouble She s quiet and respectful of her grandparents that are raising her Her parents are globe trotters that she hasn t seen in a year.Hannah had blackouts and has no memory of her life before she was eight years old Then one day in class she has another blackout. She leaves school early and is almost killed by a speedi [...]

Copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review Real rating 4.5 Well, this was an amazing book.I loved the main character,Hanna, who experiences somewhat unusual blackouts, followed by a severe headache. She can t explain why this happens, especially why she lost all of her memories when she had a blackout at the age of 8.No one wants to talk about her condition, not even her family. Her parents are travelling across the globe so she s living with her grandparents, who ignore all of her que [...]

Hanna was a shining bit of good in an otherwise shadow filled world Something tickled my fancy when I read the blurb for this book And then by the time I got around to reading it, I couldn t remember what that something was, and I didn t know what to expect That is definitely the best way to go into this book I m not going to give you a run down of the story, because going in blind, or with as little information as possible, is the best way to approach this Just take my word for it William Vann [...]

Beautiful princesses, woodsmen, big, bad wolves, handsome princes, these are just some of the characters from childhood fairy tales What happened when the tale ended and they lived happily ever after What if that veil between fantasy and reality was non existent and centuries later, there are families who are the descendants of our favorite characters Welcome to the world of Melinda Michaels as she tells us the rest of the story in Golden.Hanna is no to stranger to blacking out, but it s been a [...]

    Cee (The Mistress Case)
A line from the book Once upon a time, a weird girl kept passing out.Once upon a time, Cee wanted to fake a faint to escape Instead, she decided not to take drastic measures and to be done with a book at 50%.Reading Golden, it kept reminding me of something and soon I realized it was Twilight I m not saying it is Twilight I m just saying I thought of Twilight because my mind wandered.Note I ve only watched the Twilight movies. While both have their differences in when, how, or who, I can t help [...]

You can see this full review and at Book Briefs bookbriefs Golden is the first book in a young adult magical realism series, with each of the books also being loose retellings of fairy tales Author Melinda Michaels describes the story that way, but what is really happening is that the world she has created takes place after the fairy tale stories have all played out This world deals with the descendants of the fairy tale characters And that is really all I am going to tell you about the plot of [...]

Thanks to Melinda Michaels for giving me this book to review.Hanna has just suffered her first black out in 10 years in front of her Homeroom This terrifies her because the last time she blacked out she woke up with no memory of her life before Hanna is sure that everyone is keeping secrets from her and the only person she thinks is honest with her is William Vann, the man who everyone is telling her to avoid However, Hanna could have never of guessed that she is a descendent of someone in a fai [...]

Buy on See post on tumblr, wordpress I received an eARC of Goldern from REUTS Publications, in exchange for an honest review Golden was a little slow going at first, but the pace picked up, and I was enthralled Being the first book I ve read by Melinda Michaels, I was a little skeptical about how it was going to go I was pleasantly surprised, and found myself to be totally in love with her writing The tension throughout the book was palpable When William is introduced, and has his own chapters, [...]

Copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.3.5 stars Hanna just suffered a black out in front of her entire class She hasn t blacked out in ten years, so it isn t exactly a normal occurrence The nurse would not let her leave school, so she decides to leave on her own and skip class Not really a good idea considering she almost died She was almost ran over, but her life was saved by a boy.William just arrived in town, but he s already being taken to the police station He just sa [...]

Oh, this book I loved it I ll start off by saying that fairytale retellings are my crack. When I got an email from Melinda asking if I would read and review Golden, I had to take a few breaths and pause before I sent back and email that said YES GIVE IT TO ME NOWWWWWW I was able to reign myself in and send back a slightly civilized response without any excessive exclamation points or overuse of capitalization Once I got the book downloaded to my Kindle, I read it in two sittings It would have bee [...]

Recently, I ve been in a book slump Even my favorite authors weren t cutting it Then, I picked up Golden and devoured it like a hungry wolf This debut novel is fun and even cute at times, but balanced enough that I really worry about Hanna and William I smile when they do, and fret when they get in trouble There was maybe 10% that wasn t thrilling as much as the rest of the book Maybe because I briefly knew than Hanna, maybe I was just not feeling it that night Fairy tale retellings are becomin [...]

I received this book as an ARC from the publisher, which in no way affects my review all opinions are completely honest and my own.I won t be going too in depth about this book right now, as I m planning a thorough review that will be up on my blog fabledhaven.wordpress, but I will share a few things. The first being that I liked this book much than I expected to While I was intrigued by the summary, which is why I wanted the ARC in the first place, my expectations weren t very high I found myse [...]

Golden is a quick and easy read in the modern world where descendants of fairytales exist I had been really interested in reading this story because I love fairytales Loose fairytale retelling is an apt description of this book The story is read fairly straightforward but the build up is a bit slow I became truly invested at about the 1 3 mark of the book where I suddenly began getting the answers I wanted.Hanna is an ok heroine I didn t really love or hate her, she had just been ok I felt that [...]

Jazmen This Girl Reads A lot
3 out of 5 stars Um, let me start off by saying I absolutely did not hate this book but I can t say I loved it either The main character The main character was judgmental, and kind of whiny I m not sure if it s attributed to age or just because she is a whiny brat She has no memory of her life before ten years old She s blacking out, and things are getting weird After encountering the most handsome boy she s ever seen, Hanna finds out she s a descendant of someone who lived once upon a time Her [...]

I received an eARC from REUTS Publications in exchange for an honest review.Fairytale retellings always was one of my favorite genres Take Marissa Meyer and her Cinder series for example.GOLDEN is loosely based on Goldilocks but in a suspensful way Hanna suffers from special fainting attacks which result in a not so usual life Afraid and worried for her situation, it doesn t take long for foreboding people to enter her life and bring forth secrets well hidden.Although Hanna was intriguing, I l [...]

While starting off slow, which is something I really like, there is an undercurrent of tension surrounding why Hanna blacked out and how important William will end up being to the story Tension continued to rise when Hanna comes face to face with a wolf after narrowly missing getting hit by a train the second time she almost gets killed in a very short time span girl has my luck When Hanna overhears men talking about murders and kidnappings in New Hope, her quiet Michigan hometown, i was hooked [...]

Golden is a fantasy told in the third person narration set in New Hope Michigan by author Melinda Michaels, of whom I ve not read any thing from before, but will be sure to do so in the future Her twists on some old stories to make them current blew my mind.I loved this story because I have never read one like it before, she left the old stories alone and made this one current about later generations. The author took them in a whole new direction and I found it to be refreshing. This was a good cl [...]

If I could give this book than 5 stars I would, it s PHENOMENAL See my full review rachwithbooks.wordpress 2All I can say is that this is such a new take on the Retelling genre I loved every page of this book and I wish for

Narrative GOLDEN is told from the first person POV of Hanna Loch, a girl smart enough to know when something s amiss in her small town like the fact that everybody seems to be secreting some knowledge about her life that even she doesn t know about Her voice is very simplistic, and very analytic she s unafraid of pointing out the obvious, which made her voice strong and easy to relate to even if she didn t say anything to others about her suspicions, she tucked them away for use later. Now, there [...]

Pavitra (For The Love of Fictional Worlds)
Review was first posted on For The Love of Fictional WorldsI received a digital copy of the book by the author in exchange for an honest review. It s been awhile since I have revisited the childhood stories that used to make my sleeping time so much better DIt was the blurb for this book that made me say yes to the author s request for reviewing the book I had also thought that I wouldn t exactly be able to get to it before the Mid of June and yet here we are cause this one was quite interesting [...]

Reviewed for Readers FavoriteFor Hanna, life has always been a bit, difficult to say the least She lives with her grandparents while her parents travel the world researching one animal or another, and to make matters worse she has blackouts Well she used to have them, she hadn t had one in over ten years until today Golden When she first had one all she remembered was waking up from it with no memory of anything before the blackout, nothing, no matter how hard she tried Now she is having them ag [...]

It happened again high school senior Hanna has suffered a blackout this time, in front of her classmates Her last blackout was when she was eight, and now she s had two in one week Here s where any anticipation of a story of possible epilepsy turns to acceptance of a riveting fantasy, instead, as Hanna comes to realize that her blackouts are actually indicators of a greater danger, and as she discovers not only the prodigy of dark villain, but finds herself aligned with his purposes.Similar them [...]

As most of you probably know I rarely do reviews of YA novels I do some but not many The author sent me the blurb and it immediately caught my attention I wanted to read it There is quite a bit of fantasy in this novel which will catch you off guard as it did me I have to admit that I could not tell from which story each family originated actually I am still not positive This is definitely a book any young girl would be able to read as would her Mom which I always suggest Mom s read first then h [...]

Hanna Loch doesn t remember the first few years of her life and suffered from blackouts previously However, she hasn t had a blackout in ten years the one which took away her memories of before Until today, when Hanna blacks out in school and when she realizes this, she s understandably scared out of her wits From this newest blackout, she s determined to find out the answers about her past GOLDEN has diffused fairy tale elements with a focus on the darker aspects closer to the original Grimm fa [...]

This book was so enjoyable The characters were full of life and I just had to keep turning pagese story keeps you hanging on The ancient thrill of fairy tales was artfully woven in this modern work I am really looking forward to Melinda s next book It s not often I read a whole book in one weekend but there were no dull spots in the book, those spots where you say, okay, this would be a good time to stop for a bit I laughed, I sympathized, I was held in suspense it a spoiler to say I love wolves [...]

Not your usual fairy tale retelling, this one brings fairy tales to life as we meet their descendants Hannah searches to uncover the secret her family hides and I was intrigued the through entire book But the underlying theme to break the rules, to forge your own path despite what history says is the true star of the story I love the characters, especially Carly The writing style kept me at a distance, but the unique premise pulled me in.

Rachel (The Rest Is Still Unwritten)
Thank you to Melinda Michaels for providing me with an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review Find this review and on my blog The Rest Is Still Unwritten Golden is a highly entertaining debut novel by Melinda Michaels that is sure to please fairy tale buffs whilst still managing to feature its own unique and worthy storyline that you won t necessarily want to end.Golden follows Hanna Loch, a normal teenager who has been experiencing nasty blackouts for some time now and who strange [...]

Reality and fantasy collide in this romantic adventure As an avid fan of fairy tale retellings, I was extremely excited to read Golden and I was not disappointed The story is set in our world with everyday people However, there was magic at work, messing with people s lives One of the things I really liked about this book was that it used the original tales instead of the watered down versions that were told over time It helped to keep with the original lessons as well as introducing a few of it [...]

I couldn t finish this book At around 60% percent, I gave up and put it down because I didn t want to read it any I usually don t do reviews for books I do not finish, but since I bought this book on Kindle, it was too late to return it anyway. Now, the things that really bothered was the main character Hanna was an annoying whiny girl that got on my nerves all throughout the book I get that she was angry that they were keeping secrets from her ever since she blacked out and stuff, but whenever h [...]

THIS BOOK WAS SENT TO ME BY THE AUTHOR FOR AN HONEST REVIEWSo Melinda got in touch with me and asked me to review her book and I gladly accepted because I was intrigued with the plot It just pulled me in and after reading ACOTAR I just wanted to go with the whole fairytale retelling theme I didn t think I was going to like this book when I first started reading it, but as I went on through it, I found myself enjoying it and as the pages went by I found it difficult to like Hanna at first, but [...]
